Internship Program
The primary goal of this program is to foster a particular interest in the Lawrence Kansas Police Department and recruitment of potential candidates for employment. This not a requirement for employment as a sworn police officer. All interested applicants must partake in the interview process and pass a background check. Please note that the Lawrence Kansas Police Department Internship is unpaid, and a maximum of two interns will be accepted each semester. In the event of multiple applications, LKPD will evaluate candidates based on criteria such as recommendations from university staff, GPA, and interest in law enforcement.
Specialty Units and Assignments which Intern’s may have the opportunity to shadow include Patrol, Investigations (General Investigations, Drug Enforcement Unit, Special Victims Unit and the Forensic Science Unit), Training Unit, Crisis Response Team, Downtown Foot Patrol, Media, Office of the Chief, Office of Professional Standards, K-9 Handler, Crime Analysis Unit, Real Time Crime Center, and School Resource Officers.
The Lawrence Police Department sets very high standards for its employees, and this standard is expected of the interns as well. Minimum standards will be reviewed, including but not limited to the following:
Minimum Standards

18 years of age

United States citizen

Valid Driver’s License

No juvenile or adult criminal arrests or convictions

Have an operational telephone and permanent address

Current e-mail account for electronic correspondence

Must be enrolled in college courses
